Awards and Scholarships

California Young Reader Medal

The CYRM program gives young readers in our state the opportunity to honor their favorite books and authors, recommend them to others, and enjoy recreational reading.

Recognizing people and books

The California School Library Association gives six awards each year. Some awards are given to more than one recipient.

Scholarships, on the other hand, are given by the organization as a whole, by Northern Section to Northern Section members, and by Southern Section to Southern Section members.

To apply for an award or scholarship please follow these steps:
1. Determine which award/scholarship to which you will apply.
2. Fill out the appropriate information as asked.
3. Make the required number of copies as asked for each award/
scholarship.
4. Return all materials to the CSLA Office.
5. DEADLINE FOR ALL STATE-LEVEL AWARDS/SCHOLARSHIPS is April 30th. (Deadlines for Section-level scholarships can be found on the applications.)
6. All applicants will be notified of the results by June 1st.

The California Young Reader Medal is awarded annually by CSLA and three other sponsoring organizations, the California Association of Teachers of English, the California Reading Association, and the California Library Association. Students nominate and vote for individual books in five different categories.
