General Session SundayGeneral Session V Our keynote speaker will be Carmen Agra Deedy, a talented and compelling storyteller. Carmen Agra Deedy will speak about her earliest experiences in the library and the extraordinary characters she met on the path that led her to become an unrepentant bibliophile. She has performed at venues as diverse as in the United Kingdom, a Mediterranean cruise ship, the Kennedy Center, the Disney Institute, and on National Public Radio. Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1960, Carmen immigrated to the United States with her family during the Cuban Revolution. Transplanted to the Atlanta area, she grew up steeped in the riches of both Latin American and Southern cultures. That dual heritage has had a profound influence on her life and her work. Carmen has written six highly acclaimed children’s books. One of her best known is The Yellow Star: The Legend of King Christian X of Denmark, selected for more than two-dozen awards. Among them is one that is close to home – a nomination for the California Young Reader Medal 2003–04. Also familiar to many of you is The Library Dragon, which Carmen adapted for the family stage and has just wrapped its third season in Atlanta. Carmen’s storytelling appeal has been described as the grafting of mangoes and magnolias – the color and vitality of Cuba combined with the warmth and charm of the American South. That is Carmen Agra Deedy. The appearance of Carmen Agra Deedy is sponsored in part by Peachtree Publishers. In addition to Carmen Deedy, there will be 36 other authors and illustrators attending the brunch. Click the following links to see the names and their websites, in html format or PDF. MENU: |
