PAM MUÑOZ RYAN on "Beginnings, Belongings, and My Journey to Books"
Experience a powerful finale of your bountiful harvest surrounded by authors and illustrators, as well as the chance to hear Pam Muñoz Ryan speak. You will have the opportunity to chat with an author or illustrator before the keynote address begins.

Pam Muñoz Ryan was born and raised in the San Joaquin Valley and comes from a background that is a mix of Spanish, Mexican, Basque, Italian, and Oklahoman. Many of her childhood memories revolve around big family gatherings. When in fifth grade, she moved across town and did not fit in. That is when she discovered her branch library. ”I spent many long, hot valley summers riding my bike to the library. The library became my favorite hangout because my family didn’t have a swimming pool and the library was air-conditioned. That’s how I got hooked on reading and books.”

Pam has written over 30 books for young people that include picture books for the very young (Mud Is Cake, Mice and Beans, Hello Ocean), picture books for older readers (Amelia and Eleanor Go for a Ride, When Marian Sang, and Nacho and Lolita), to middle-grade and young-adult novels. Esperanza Rising received the Pura Belpre Medal, the Jane Addams Peace Award, and ALA Top Ten Best Book for Young Adults, the Americas Award Honor, and other accolades. Most recently, Becoming Naomi León received the ALA Schneider Family Award, the Tomas Rivera Award, an ALA Notable book, and the Pura Belpre Honor. She is twice the recipient of the Willa Cather Literary Award for Writing. Four of her titles have been nominated for the California Young Reader Medal, including the currently nominated Becoming Naomi León, and Riding Freedom, which won the medal in 2000.

Pam now lives in San Diego County with her family.
