General Session IV
CYRM Award Banquet

Saturday, November 18th
7:00–9:00pm
Cost: $34

Avi, the 2006 California Young Reader Medal winner for The Good Dog, will be unable to attend our banquet due to a scheduling conflict.

We are fortunate to have Wendelin Van Draanen, CYRM winner in 2004 (Flipped), and 2002 nominee for Sammy Keyes and the Sisters of Mercy, as our guest speaker. California is her state, and winning the CYRM was a huge honor for her. She is thrilled to be our speaker, and we are so lucky to have her.

Winner of the 1999 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Children’s Mystery, Wendelin’s Sammy Keyes books are not just mysteries, but coming-into-your-own stories that deal with growing up and making choices about going down the right path. She sees literature as a method of guidance, information, and contemplation. The tenth Sammy Keyes, published last year, is her half-way point in the set of books.

A high school computer teacher for 15 years, Wendelin awoke early each morning to write before going off to school. It took 10 years of trying before a novel, How I Survived Being a Girl, was accepted. Now, with so many successful books under her belt, including the four Shredderman books, she writes full-time. Her newest book, Runaway, released in September, is a story about the homeless girl that Sammy encounters in Sammy Keyes and the Sisters of Mercy.

In her spare time, Wendelin can be found playing her purple electric guitar, reading, or jogging with her whippets, Bongo and Jazz. She lives on the central coast with her husband and two sons.

Note: Free seating room will be available for those who would prefer to eat elsewhere; however, food may not be brought into the room.

To purchase a banquet ticket, see registration form.
