General Sessions - Saturday

General Session III
Membership Meeting

Saturday, November 17th
3:45–5:00pm

Join your colleagues and association officers for an afternoon to celebrate members and membership in CSLA. You’ll enjoy sitting by regions with plenty of time to chat, special awards to honor fellow members, and an open microphone forum. Your thoughts and suggestions are important and will be added to 2007-2008 State Executive Board meeting agendas. Members will also have the opportunity to volunteer for a variety of committees as well as for other opportunities to serve.

This is a free and open event, so come join the most important meeting of the conference where you, the members, are truly the stars!

Special presentations at this event include the John Blanchard Memorial Scholarship (sponsored by Mook & Blanchard), the Leadership for Diversity Scholarship, and the CSLA Honorary Membership Award.

CSLA thanks Follett Software for sponsoring the refreshments.

General Session IV
CYRM Award Banquet

Saturday, November 17th
7:00–9:00pm
Cost: $33

Karen Hesse, author, and Wendy Watson, illustrator, are the recipients of the 2007 California Young Reader Medal in the Picture Book for Older Readers category for the The Cats of Krasinski Square.

In and around the edges of many different and varied jobs, Hesse has written poems, stories, and books, books, books. Hesse’s critically acclaimed novels include Witness, the story of the Ku Klux Klan’s attempt to recruit members in a small town in Vermont in 1924. Her novel Out of the Dust was awarded the Newbery Medal for 1998. Other books include Come On, Rain and The Music of the Dolphins.

The Cats of Krasinski Square, a portrayal of the Holocaust, tells the story of life in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II. It is a well-researched, fictional account that is a testament to history and a passionate will to survive.

Wendy is the author-illustrator of twenty books for children and has illustrated more than sixty books for other authors. Her books have received many awards and have appeared on numerous recommended lists.

Come share the evening with these two talented people. The appearance of Karen Hesse and Wendy Watson at tonight’s banquet is sponsored by Scholastic.
