Karen
Hesse, author, and Wendy Watson, illustrator,
are the recipients of the 2007 California Young Reader Medal
in the Picture Book for Older Readers category for the The Cats of
Krasinski Square.
In and around
the edges of many different and varied jobs, Hesse has written poems,
stories, and books, books, books. Hesse’s critically acclaimed novels
include Witness, the story of the Ku Klux Klan’s attempt
to recruit members in a small town in Vermont in 1924. Her novel Out
of the Dust was awarded the Newbery Medal for 1998. Other books include
Come On, Rain and The Music of the Dolphins.
The
Cats of Krasinski Square, a portrayal of the Holocaust, tells the
story of life in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II. It is a well-researched,
fictional account that is a testament to history and a passionate will
to survive.
Wendy is
the author-illustrator of twenty books for children and has illustrated
more than sixty books for other authors. Her books have received many
awards and have appeared on numerous recommended lists.

Salad: Spinach Salad with Strawberries, Almonds and Golden Raisins
