CYRM Award Banquet

7:00–9:00pm
Cost: $33

Karen Hesse, author, and Wendy Watson, illustrator, are the recipients of the 2007 California Young Reader Medal in the Picture Book for Older Readers category for the The Cats of Krasinski Square.

In and around the edges of many different and varied jobs, Hesse has written poems, stories, and books, books, books. Hesse’s critically acclaimed novels include Witness, the story of the Ku Klux Klan’s attempt to recruit members in a small town in Vermont in 1924. Her novel Out of the Dust was awarded the Newbery Medal for 1998. Other books include Come On, Rain and The Music of the Dolphins.

The Cats of Krasinski Square, a portrayal of the Holocaust, tells the story of life in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II. It is a well-researched, fictional account that is a testament to history and a passionate will to survive.

Wendy is the author-illustrator of twenty books for children and has illustrated more than sixty books for other authors. Her books have received many awards and have appeared on numerous recommended lists.
